Even if someone comes with a topic that covers a specific discipline at a specific facility, we want to note that. From these discussions, patterns will emerge which will focus our development efforts.Who should be there? As stated, we would like as diverse a chorus of voices as we can assemble. Administrators, Investigators, IT staff, Service Coordinators, Team Leaders, Front-line staff, Contract staff, Directors of Nursing, Directors of Psychology-all are welcome. We truly want a variety of input.

Due to the home and community-based location of their work, community support staff and other in-home care providers have unique challenges in maintaining appropriate clinical boundaries with their clients. In this session participants will explore numerous potential pitfalls that can ensnare well-meaning professionals. Discussion of specific problems from participants own experience will be encouraged. The Code of Ethics for Psychiatric Rehabilitation Practitioners will be used to demonstrate how an ethics code can be beneficial in guiding practice.

Jan Heumann holds a Bachelors degree in Recreational Therapy and Masters degree in Counseling Psychology. As a 28-year veteran in mental health, her experience includes work as a Recreational Therapist, a Psychosocial Rehabilitation Program Supervisor, Community Support Supervisor, Program Director at a Community Mental Health Center, and Training Director for a state-wide University of Missouri Extension project. She is currently the Clinical Director for New Horizons Community Support Services in Columbia, a position she has held for ten years.

To see Ms. Heumann’s talk please join us on August 16, 2007 at 9:30am CDT.

Dr. Epstein’s talk, titled Evaluation of an Interactive Substance Abuse Education Program will discuss outcomes of a study funded by the National Institute on Drug Abuse. With this funding, The Missouri Institute of Mental Health produced a series of media tools designed to teach fourth-, fifth-, and sixth-grade children from African American churches about the science of drug addiction. Beginning with a core curriculum, we created two separate programs. In the SpaceScouts version of the program, the content is embedded within a narrative storyline delivered via an interactive DVD. In the LockerTalk version of the program, content is delivered in a more didactic form via an interactive CD-ROM. Youth from a dozen churches were randomly assigned to one of these two conditions or a waitlist control. We conducted pretest, post-test, and four- and eight-month follow-up evaluations. We ran an additional sample of youth through our programs during a summer camp. In addition to the outcomes, this presentation will also discuss implications for future substance education efforts.

To see Dr. Epstein’s talk please join us on July 19th, 2007 at 9:30am CDT.
