Screening, Brief Intervention, and Referral to Treatment (SBIRT) Training Certification

Summary:

SBIRT is a prevention and early intervention initiative for adults 18 and over. All patients in general medical settings are screened for risky alcohol and drug use. Evidence-based brief education, brief coaching, and referrals to specialty treatment providers are provided as needed. Screenings are offered annually.

Three trainings help you understand why SBIRT is important and to learn how to provide screening and brief intervention services:

*Screening training – Why and how to administer the brief screen to identify patients who need a closer look at their alcohol or substance use risks.

*Brief Intervention / Education – Assess patients for risky alcohol and drug use and use the personal risk assessment report to guide a brief motivational education session for those at moderate levels of risk.

*Brief Coaching – Coach patients with significant alcohol and drug use risks in a 6-session manualized process using motivational enhancement and cognitive behavioral therapy techniques.
